Thanksgiving and gallstones

What can you eat at Thanksgiving with gallstones?

No single plate fits everyone, and the advice your doctor or dietitian gave you comes first. Among GallDiet users with gallstones, turkey breast averages in the high 90s out of 100, and sweet potato and green beans in the high 80s. Mashed potatoes, gravy and ham land in the 70s, dessert pies around 60 and mac and cheese around 50. A higher score means fewer common gallstone triggers in the food, mainly fat.

Why the scores differ

The turkey scores high. The sides decide the plate.

Lean turkey scores highest

Turkey breast has little fat, and GallDiet does not count turkey as a trigger, so it averages in the high 90s. Almost every turkey scan so far was breast meat. Turkey skin and dark meat have more fat and have not been scanned enough to score.

Butter, cream and cheese add up

GallDiet counts butter, cream and cheese as triggers. Sweet potato and green beans average in the high 80s, while mashed potatoes, usually made with butter or milk, average in the low 70s and mac and cheese around 50.

What the score leaves out

It does not know your portion size, and a holiday plate holds several foods at once. Some people react to foods that score high, and others eat low-scoring foods without trouble.

Your own answer

An average can't tell you how your body will react.

The same food sits fine with some people with gallstones and causes trouble for others. These scores show the pattern across many people, not what will happen on your plate.

GallDiet scores your own meal from a photo, a barcode or a typed name, checks it against the triggers you have saved, and keeps a record of what you ate before each bad day.

About these numbers

Where the scores come from.

The scores on this page are averages of what GallDiet gave to meals its users scanned or typed in, up to November 6, 2026, among people who have gallstones and still have their gallbladder. The short table for people without a gallbladder comes from 74 scans by 55 people. Each person counts once in each average. A group of meals is shown only when at least 10 different people scanned it, and every number is rounded.

A GallDiet score starts at 100 and loses points for common gallstone triggers in the meal, mostly fat. It does not know your portion size, your medical history or how your body reacts.

GallDiet does not diagnose, treat, prevent or cure gallbladder disease or any medical condition. Use these scores alongside advice from your doctor or dietitian, not in place of it.

Medical context: public guidance from the NIDDK covers eating, diet and nutrition for gallstones. If you have severe pain, fever, vomiting, jaundice or chest pain, seek medical care immediately.

FAQ

Common questions about Thanksgiving with gallstones.

What should I eat at Thanksgiving with gallstones?

No single plate fits everyone, and the advice your doctor or dietitian gave you comes first. In GallDiet, the Thanksgiving foods that score highest are turkey breast, sweet potato, green beans, roasted vegetables and squash, all in the 80s or 90s out of 100. Mac and cheese, dessert pies and pumpkin foods score lowest. The score does not see your portion size.

Can I eat turkey with gallstones?

Turkey breast averages in the high 90s out of 100 in GallDiet, across 21 people with gallstones, and turkey sandwiches and wraps average in the low 80s across 31. GallDiet does not count turkey itself as a trigger. Almost all of these scans were breast meat. Turkey skin and dark meat have more fat, and too few people have scanned them to publish a score.

Can I eat stuffing with gallstones?

Only 4 people with gallstones have scanned stuffing in GallDiet so far, too few to publish an average. Stuffing is often made with butter, and sometimes with sausage, and GallDiet counts both as triggers. Typing your own recipe into GallDiet scores it from its ingredients.

Can I eat mashed potatoes and gravy with gallstones?

Mashed potatoes average in the low 70s out of 100 across 52 people with gallstones, and meals with gravy average in the low 70s across 17. Mashed potatoes are usually made with butter or milk, which GallDiet counts against the score. Too few people have scanned gravy on its own to score it separately.

Can I eat pumpkin pie with gallstones?

Only 3 people with gallstones have scanned pumpkin pie in GallDiet, too few to publish an average. Dessert pies, mostly apple, average around 60 out of 100 across 10 people, and pumpkin foods and drinks average in the high 60s across 20. GallDiet counts pastry as a trigger, and cream or whipped cream on top counts too.

Can I eat ham with gallstones?

Ham averages in the high 70s out of 100 across 23 people with gallstones in GallDiet, lower than turkey breast in the high 90s. Most of these scans were sliced or roast ham, some served with sides.

What about cranberry sauce and the casseroles?

Too few people with gallstones have scanned them in GallDiet to publish averages: 1 person scanned cranberry sauce, 1 scanned sweet potato casserole and nobody has scanned green bean casserole yet. Green beans and sweet potato on their own or in a meal both average in the high 80s. Casseroles often add butter, cheese, cream soup or fried onions, and GallDiet counts each against the score.

What can I eat at Thanksgiving after gallbladder removal?

Among GallDiet users who have had their gallbladder removed, sweet potato averages in the low 90s out of 100, turkey breast and corn in the mid 80s, turkey sandwiches and wraps in the low 80s and mashed potatoes in the high 60s, across 11 to 16 people each. Follow the advice your surgeon or dietitian gave you.

Where do these numbers come from?

They are averages of the scores GallDiet gave to 426 scans from 247 people with gallstones who still have their gallbladder. Each person counts once in each average, however many times they scanned the food. A group is shown only when at least 10 different people scanned it. The scores are estimates based on common gallstone triggers, mainly fat, and they do not change with portion size. They are not medical advice.
